Kris and i are in monterey at a cheap motel. Plan is to go scuba diving locally tomorrow, relocate to a hotel with a jacuzzi, then dive again in a more remote grotto in Big Sur. In other news, I have finally been to the mystery spot.

10:57 am

I'm going to meet a guy about playing trumpet/trombone in band described as "bluesy-ragtime steampunk alla Josephine Baker"
The other group I'm playing with twice a month is doing motly 1930s-1950's jazz standards like "Foggy Day" "Lullaby of Birldand" "Dind" "Sugar". The second practice with them I was far more relaxed and played better, even though I had to rush from work had to play on the $30 toy trumpet I keep in the office.

This memorial day weekend I'm driving out to nevada for the Propane Hunting extravaganza. Mike's birthday, and reed's, and jane's.
Some of the people who I know will be there: Eso, Mike, Jane, Reed, Rick, MotoMike, Morgan, Audrey, Andy, Mella... I guess a lot more. We hope nobody gets any new holes in them.
We'll be staying in Reno on Friday, Shooting Saturday, camping, Exploring copper mines Sunday, and back late.

And if all goes well i'll make it back in time for slim's day at the races birthday celebration on Monday. If only I could get together a marx bros costume for it...

Right and there continues to be this Spurious Causality thing. We're going to need to raise some funds.

If you count the places I drove through without stopping to get a feel for anything, that would look like

visited 24 states (48%)
Create your own visited map of The United States or jurisdische veraling duits?

But if you narrow it to the places I stayed long enough to form an impression, it would look like

visited 19 states (38%)
Create your own visited map of The United States or another interesting project

Then Noisebridge and a productive (if ADD riddled) planning meeting.
Then Mission Pie and stroll around the mission with Audrey.

10:14 pm - trumpet

I have just returned from a night of trumpeting. I want that hobby to be more prominent in my life because it makes me really happy. Some of my other hobbies, as much as I am glad to do them, feel like work. Music never does.

I found a group on Craigslist and showed up. The group members are much older than I am, and have been very involved in music for longer. I was pretty happy at my ability to sight read on Trumpet, having done relatively little of it. I grew up playing trombone, which is a bass clef instrument.

So I was able to play along the melodies on songs like "how high the moon", "a foggy day" and "lullaby of birdland" as well as several I'd never heard before. My solos were a bit hit or miss- I'm still better at playing intuitively than tying to follow the written changes. And three hours is longer than my chops are able to handle these days...

So I offered to play with them again if I'm not slowing them down too much--- and I will keep looking around craigslist for other opportunities.

It's a bit mentally exhausting, I could fall asleep in a heartbeat.

09:50 pm - spurious causality

There are certain people who, no matter what we do together, it feels productive. Even if the produce is impossible to wag a finger at. Here are some things that were talked about in the presence of slim, andy, audrey, and burstein lest I forget.

Maker Faire autonoma called ice-9 - organize by clustering one attribute (like color) and repelling others. How do instructions spread in this model? tests at dolores beach...

Spurious Causality: some really fucking talented people are on board. Console is called "cause" all else are "effect". We make a bunch of identical uniquely addressable wireless modules that output several different signals when triggered- the thing their hooked up to gets to decide how to intereperate the outputs. One output should be a voltage which rises with concurrent presses and tends toward zero over time.
One effect should be a plainly visible sign that lights the word "effect". Whichever button is pushed first gets mapped to that to convey the relationship between console and distant results.

We should track down people months later based on photo and/or guestbook, hand them a fish wrapped in the photo and say "you pushed the purple button, here's your fish". Get others to integrate our modules into their remote "effects". Some effects are categorized as "local" like the flash, may be seperate from "modules".

schrodinger's butterfly. Ongoing narrative over the years. Buttons labled things like "Hurricane Katrina" suggesting past influence (esp since it happened during bm)

04:50 pm - Homeward Bound (boston)

I'm here in Boston at a pretty fancy hotel our hosts put us up in. I've spent the day walking around the 'freedom trail' through the old city and all the major American revolution sites. I've also seen the MIT nuclear reactor and the place where "Cheers" was filmed.

I've seen the entire length of America go by at 70mph. Cali, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts in that order. One of my favorite surprises was the "City Museum" in St. Louis, I really recommend it for people who like industrial art. Three Mile Island was a bit anticlimactic, but we got a great story from one of the locals.

If we could do it again I would go see Marlboro Land in Rapid City, The house on the Rock in Wisconsin, and the shopping mall in Monroe where "Dawn of the Dead" was filmed.

In keeping with our tradition of not sleeping in the same state twice, in a few hours I'll hop on a jet and fly home. See you all tomorrow!

01:48 am - Forward

We're seeing the City Museum in St. Louis in the morning, then driving in the direction of NYC.
Does anyone have suggestions for us between here and there?
